To practice virtual care for diagnosing and prescribing, currently the only prerequisit is an established VCPR.  Here’s the basic test:

Have you physically examined the animal within the past year (or so)?

  • If yes, then you can use whatever telehealth tool you would like to diagnose, prescribe, and treat that animal.

  • If no, then you cannot diagnose or prescribe medication for the animal using virtual health tools.

Under the current legislation, if you follow that test, then you shouldn’t have any problems.

That means that for every current client, you can use whatever virtual tools you think are appropriate to provide quality care to those clients.

Even with non-clients, most State Practice Acts allow for general advice for triage and for emergency situations. We recommend you consult with your own state practice act for specifics.
